YOUSEVEN MASK_V3 — PATTERN AND PROCESS

With COVID-19 changing things how we interact with people & stores, and the international encouragement of wearing facemasks when unable to distance. I thought I’d share the process for the design I prototyped between March and May, and have been wearing since. It’s a fit & style that I found works better for me, with a raw finish due to the equipment & skills I have on hand currently.

(Apologies for the lack of imagery/gifs for every step, was tough to film solo)

* Disclaimer: I’m a hobbyist, not a professional, there are much better patterns and tutorials out there, please seek them out too when considering making your own face coverings & masks.

STEP 1 — TRACE PATTERN ON EXTERIOR & INTERIOR PIECES

STEP 2 — CUT PATTERN

STEP 3 — SEW EXTERIOR & INTERIOR EDGES AT TOP

STEP 4 — PRESS IN EXTERIOR-FACING BOX PLEAT USING PATTERN AS GUIDE

STEP 5 — SEW EXTERIOR & INTERIOR SIDE EDGES OVER THE PRESSED IN PLEAT

STEP 6 — ADD AN EYELET TO EACH CORNER.

STEP 7 — USING SHOELACES OR CORD, TIE 2 INTERSECTING SCAFFOLD KNOTS IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS THROUGH EACH PAIR OF EYELETS, ONCE ON EACH SIDE. THIS CREATES ADJUSTABLE EARLOOPS FOR THE MASK. CUT TO SIZE.

STEP 8 — INSERT WIRE INTO YOUR DESIRED TOP SEAM BY CUTTING/RIPPING SMALL HOLE AT ONE SIDE.

OPTIONAL STEP 9 — FINISH EDGES WITH BINDING OR SEAM TAPE.
